What to expect during your first family law appointment

Whether you are contemplating separation or are in the middle of a family law dispute, it is important to seek expert legal advice as soon as possible.  Getting advice early is crucial, because the decisions that you make with respect to living arrangements, arrangements for children and the management of your finances shortly after separation can have a significant impact on the outcome of your family law matter.

Initial appointments are usually 1 to 1.5 hours in length, depending on the complexity of the matter and scope of issues you would like to discuss.  During your first family law appointment we will provide you with legal advice specific to your circumstances and answer any questions you have.   We will also discuss with you the next steps to progress your matter and the level of support you would like from our family lawyers moving forward.

To ensure you get the most out of your first appointment we suggest that you bring the following with you to your appointment:

  1. Financial matters – a list of your assets, liabilities and financial resources and their estimated value.
  2. Parenting matters – a copy of any existing parenting orders or parenting plan.
  3. Any recent correspondence you have received from your former partner’s lawyer.
  4. A list of any questions or issues you would like to discuss.
